Monforte Castle crowns Campobasso's highest hill and reached its present form in 1459. Around it lives Molise's own Romeo and Juliet legend: in 1587 the merchant Civerra locked away his daughter Delicata to stop her love for Fonzo Mastrangelo, son of the family's bitterest rivals. When Fonzo finally returned, Delicata was dying, and he only had time to give her a ring before she faded away. Witnesses over the years, including a group of students, claim to have seen a female figure walking the hill at night – Delicata's restless spirit, who never got to live her love. The castle's underground prisons and fabled secret tunnels deepen the site's mystique.
