The massive stone castle of Zavattarello in the Oltrepo Pavese was the seat of the condottiero family Dal Verme. Its resident ghost is said to be Pietro Dal Verme - the count forced into a political marriage with Chiara Sforza who, according to tradition, died poisoned in 1485, his heart still belonging to his early-departed love Cecilia del Maino. Most famous is the 'Stanza degli Spiriti', the Room of Spirits, where in the 1990s a chair was repeatedly found moved in the morning and no one dared spend the night. The castle has been restored and is open to visitors, with ghost-themed events around Halloween.
