The Black Castle of Balatonederics

Locals hold that restless souls still walk in the Black Castle, and visitors have told of strange shadows moving around the building. The legend begins in 1912, when the castle's cook was murdered by a jealous herdsboy who was in love with her. Two years later the owner, Jenő Nedeczky, took his own life, and in the years that followed more mysterious deaths occurred — among them a secret double agent said to have killed himself here shortly before the Second World War.

The house on the northern shore of Lake Balaton took its name from its dark doors and window frames — and from everything that happened behind them. The combination of murder, suicide and espionage has made it one of Hungary's most talked-about haunted houses.
