The farm and its historical roots

Gunne's farm opened in 1991 and is the result of a collaboration between Upplands Väsby municipality and the Stockholm County Museum. It was built on the basis of archaeological finds from an eleventh-century Viking farmstead discovered during the expansion of the E18 motorway. The site holds authentic Viking-age buildings, including a dwelling house, a cookhouse and a byre, and every detail has been carefully recreated to give a genuine sense of farm life in the Viking age.

Ancient remains and rune stones

Gunne's farm lies in Smedby park, an area rich in cultural remains. There are Iron Age grave fields, Bronze Age cairns and several rune stones, including one commemorating a woman named as Gunne's daughter, from whom the farm takes its name. The inscription reads: "Vibjörn had the stone cut in memory of Gunne's daughter, his wife." The stories behind these runes and graves carry memories of a vanished society in which faith, love and death played central roles.

Viking markets

Gunne's farm is not only historical. An annual Viking market is held here in September, a lively event drawing both local people and visitors from across the country. Craftspeople, warriors and market stalls create a living atmosphere of the Viking age. The farm is also open for school visits, and many children get their first insight into life on a Viking farmstead here, which makes it an important cultural hub for Upplands Väsby.
