The hill where the old Dover Road climbs out of London was for centuries the traveller's dread: dense woods, highwaymen — and on the summit a gallows with gibbet cages where hanged robbers were left to rot as a warning, a sight Dickens fixed in A Tale of Two Cities. In 1844 parts of a murdered woman were found buried on the hillside; the crime was never solved. Ever since, a woman in white has been said to step into the road at night, grieving and searching — by tradition, for the rest of her body. The hill's lore also includes a phantom rider in eighteenth-century dress galloping down the slope and screams from the old gallows crest. Motorists still report night-time figures dissolving in their headlights.
