The baroque palace of Lunéville, known as the Versailles of Lorraine, was the residence of the Dukes of Lorraine and of the exiled Polish king Stanislas Leszczynski. Since 1719 the palace has suffered thirteen fires, several of which, by tradition, have strangely struck on the night of 2–3 January. Legend blames Nicolas Ferry, Stanislas's famous court dwarf 'Bébé', who was promised a wife he never received – and who takes his revenge in death by playing with fire. Even the great blaze of 2003, which devastated parts of the palace, was immediately woven into the legend.
