In the autumn of 1934, an apartment block at Calle Gascón de Gotor 2 in Zaragoza was shaken by one of Spain's most infamous poltergeist cases. A disembodied voice spoke through the kitchen stove pipe, cackled at night and addressed the maid Pascuala by name, warning her not to light the fire. Police conducted what is considered the country's first official investigation of a paranormal phenomenon, authorities cleared the building, and even The Times of London reported on the duende. The voice fell silent in 1935 without explanation; the house was later demolished and replaced by a new one still popularly known as the Edificio Duende.
