Edinburgh Castle is a historic fortress in Edinburgh, Scotland, standing on Castle Rock — a site inhabited by people since at least the Iron Age. Since the reign of King Malcolm III in the eleventh century there has been a royal castle on the rock, and it remained a royal residence until 1633.

Through its history Edinburgh Castle has served as a royal residence, an armoury, a treasury, a national archive, a mint, a prison, a military fortress and the home of Scotland's crown jewels, the Honours of Scotland. A research study in 2014 identified 26 sieges over the castle's 1,100-year history, giving it a claim to be "the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world".

The castle is listed among Edinburgh's haunted places. Among the phenomena reported are a headless drummer seen before historic assaults, prisoners of war from the Seven Years' War whose footsteps are heard in the underground vaults, and a figure in a tartan kilt seen on Castle Rock.

Today Edinburgh Castle is one of Britain's most visited tourist attractions. Ghost walks along the Royal Mile often end at the castle at dusk.
