The largest parish church in Scandinavia rises like a cathedral over the plains of Thy, built around 1140–1160. In the churchyard lies a double Romanesque gravestone, and around it survives one of Denmark's cruellest legends. Liden Kirsten, half-sister of King Valdemar the Great, loved Prince Buris, brother of Queen Sophie. When the king learned of it, legend says he had Kirsten danced to death, and she was buried here. Buris was blinded, castrated and chained to the church wall on a chain so short that he could barely reach her grave. There he lay until he died, and was then laid in the same grave as her. The tradition endures: brides from the district still place their bouquet on the stone before going home as married women.
