Beneath the heath at Daugbjerg runs a black web of passages cut from the limestone since the Middle Ages. Sixty metres down lies the largest grotto, known as Jens Langkniv's cave. His legend is Jutland's own outlaw epic: Jens Olesen was outlawed after killing the bailiff who wanted his mother burned as a witch. Armed with a knife tied to a long line, which he could throw and snatch back, he roamed during the Thirty Years' War while Wallenstein's troops ravaged Jutland in 1627–28. Legend has it he was pardoned after fighting the imperial soldiers at the gates of Viborg, but returned to his old life and was finally executed in Horsens. The chalk galleries remain: cold, white, soundless — and utterly black the instant a lamp goes out.
