Saint Peter's Church on Nørregade is Copenhagen's oldest surviving church building and, since 1585, the church of the German congregation, with famous burial chapels full of sarcophagi. To it clings the ghost story of Johann Friedrich Struensee, the German royal physician who became Queen Caroline Mathilde's lover and, for a year and a half, Denmark's true ruler. In April 1772 he was beheaded and dismembered on Østre Fælled, his body laid on wheel and stake – he was never granted a consecrated grave. According to the newspaper Kristeligt Dagblad, Struensee's restless spirit is instead said to seek out his countrymen's church, haunting the burial chapels of Saint Peter's. The power-hungry doctor who abolished torture yet ended under the executioner's axe is said still to pace the vaults, where the city's German elite rest in their coffins of lead and oak.
