Where the lawns of Fælledparken now fill with picnics and football matches once lay Østre Fælled, scene of one of the most infamous executions in Danish history. On 28 April 1772, Johann Friedrich Struensee and Count Enevold Brandt were brought here after the coup against them – some 30,000 people, nearly half of Copenhagen's population, crowded around the scaffold. First their right hands were struck off. Struensee writhed so violently that executioner Mühlhausen missed his stroke; it took three blows before the head parted from the body and could be raised to the crowd. The bodies were quartered and carted to Vestre Fælled, where the parts were laid out on wheel and stake for public display. Anyone crossing the park's open fields at dusk walks, quite literally, over the ground where absolutism's bloodiest theatre was staged.
