The Consistory House on Nørregade is one of Copenhagen's oldest buildings, its medieval cellar vaults once part of the bishop's manor. For centuries the university used the cellar as its karcer – a private jail where unruly students were locked up. According to legend, retold in the Danish press, a student's soul still walks down here: he is said to have died under mysterious circumstances in the prison cellar, in a tale where a boiling kettle and corpses from the anatomists' trade play a chilling part. It was an age when the university's medical men acquired bodies by dubious means, and the line between science and grave-robbing was thin. Over the years, students and staff have spoken of inexplicable cold and unease in the old vaults, where the 15th-century brick still holds the memory of the imprisoned.
