On the corner house at Torvet and Nørregade in Køge sits a memorial plaque recording that the Køge Huskors raged here from 1608 to 1615 – Denmark's most infamous case of alleged demonic possession. It began when merchant's wife Anna Bartskær heard a demonic hen clucking under the bed at night, and a loathsome toad-like creature appeared in the yard, moving on large hen's legs. Soon the whole household was struck by fits and possessions. In 1612 the merchant Hans Bartskær accused a neighbour, Johanne Thomes, of sending the devil into his house, and an avalanche of trials followed: fifteen women lost their lives – eleven were burned alive at the stake, two took their own lives, one vanished. The case caused such a stir that the Catholic Church commissioned a report still kept in the Vatican archives. The house stands by the square to this day.
