Dragør Strandhotel by the harbour has a room guests talk about long afterwards. It lies at the far end of the first-floor corridor, and those who have stepped inside describe being seized by an intense, inexplicable terror — the sense that someone unseen already lives in the room and has no intention of moving. Who it is, nobody knows, but the house has had four centuries to gather candidates. The hotel ranks among Denmark's oldest inns: the Gamle Kro stood here as early as the 1500s, watering thirsty merchants during the great herring markets, and from the mid-1600s Svend Hansen Gynge ran a licensed tavern with the right to brew beer and distil spirits. Sailors, smugglers and travellers have passed through ever since. In Dragør's local lore, the room at the end of the corridor has earned a reputation all its own.
