Lolland's oldest castle was built on a low islet in Nysted Nor and is first named in 1329 — in the darkest stretch of the Danish Middle Ages. Christopher II had lost his grip on the realm; in 1328 he was forced to pledge the whole of Lolland and Falster as security for an enormous loan from the count of Holstein. After his defeat at Kropp Hede north of Dannevirke, the king fled to Sakskøbing. Two knights and their men broke into the stone house where he was hiding, and he tried to escape up the chimney. They pulled him down and took him to Aalholm, where he was locked away. The castle still stands with thick walls facing the water, rebuilt again and again but never rid of its original function: a house built to keep people in.
