Above the Ilm valley in Thuringia looms the Oberschloss Kranichfeld, a medieval hilltop castle with one of the region's darkest White Lady legends. The story tells of a lady of the castle who killed her own children and never recovered from the loss – after death she returns as a figure in white, tormented by her conscience, to teach the living to feel fear. She is said to appear in the castle's windows and in the courtyard at dusk. The legend belongs to a whole family of Thuringian White Lady tales, but the Kranichfeld version is among the most frequently retold. The castle burned in 1934 and was only restored decades later, giving the ruin ample time to nurture its reputation.
