In the Dannemora mines, where iron ore has been extracted since the 1400s, it is said that something more than machinery and workers moves in the deep shafts. Accounts of a gruvfru — a mine woman who appears sometimes as a beautiful woman and sometimes as a frightening old crone — have circulated for generations. Mine mylings, the souls of those who never found rest, are also said to walk the dark passages, their voices echoing through the cold stone. Are these only legends, or is there something real in the darkness of the mine?

Roots in the Middle Ages

The Dannemora mines, in Östhammar municipality in Uppland, have been central to Swedish iron production for more than 500 years. Ore extraction was documented here as early as 1481, and the site quickly became known for the high quality of its iron. Ore from Dannemora was used among other things in Sheffield's famous steel production, which helped make both the mine and the region internationally known.

During the 1700s several technical innovations were introduced at Dannemora. Sweden's first steam engine was installed here, although the attempt was far from successful. The imposing headframe, today a protected building, is one of the few remaining monuments to that era and marks the mine's historical significance.

Hard conditions underground

The mine has always been a dangerous workplace. Water ingress, collapses and accidents were common, particularly before modern safety measures were introduced. During the 1600s and 1700s children were used as helpers in the cramped, dark passages, and their labour gave rise to the stories of mine mylings — the souls of the young who never left.

The harsh life in the mine also produced folklore and ritual. The gruvfru, a guardian spirit or harbinger, was believed to hold power over the workers' fate. If she appeared it might be a warning of coming disaster — or a reminder to show respect for the mine's dangers.

The past endures

Today the Dannemora mines are a place where history and industrial heritage meet. Although extraction may yet resume, it is above all the site's historical value that draws visitors. The open pit known as Storrymningen, with roots in the Middle Ages, and the impressive headframe convey a sense of the large-scale industry that once shaped both the place and the people here.

Objects from the mine, donated to the Nordic Museum and the National Museum of Science and Technology, tell of technical progress and of hard life underground. Walking trails in the area offer a chance to explore the surrounding nature and reflect on the mine's history.
