The cemetery between Smichov and Kosire was laid out during the plague of 1680 and closed in 1884, and has stood half-abandoned behind its railings ever since. Two legends keep it alive. The first is the svata holcicka, the holy little girl: three-year-old Anicka Degenova, who according to tradition fell from a window during a thunderstorm and was taken up by an angel. Toys, candles and notes from children asking for help are still left at her stone. The second concerns the huge cast-iron tomb of Bishop Leopold Thun-Hohenstein, whose figure holds an open book. The legend says that whoever comes here at midnight on New Year's Eve and looks into the book can read the names of those who will leave the world in the year just begun.
