The Palácio Guanabara in Laranjeiras was Princess Isabel's residence and now houses Rio's state government. According to legend, an enslaved man was tortured to death by an overseer during the palace's first renovation – and with his last breath he laid a curse: no resident of the mansion on Rua Guanabara shall ever know peace. History has fed the superstition: Isabel was driven from the country when the republic was proclaimed in 1889, the wife of Marshal Hermes da Fonseca died during their stay, King Albert of Belgium came to grief after a month as a guest, and a long line of governors and presidents have fallen before their time. The curse remains one of Rio's most stubborn legends of power.
