It is said that none other than Carl Hårleman — one of Sweden's most celebrated architects and the man responsible for the design of the present castle building — still walks the corridors. And Hårleman is not merely a passive presence; he lets visitors know he is there.

Rattling chains and cold draughts

The accounts of Hårleman's ghost are many and vivid. He is heard as a faint rattling of chains as he moves through the castle, particularly at night. Several visitors have felt a cold breath on the neck, as though someone had exhaled on them, and some claim to have heard whispering in their ears when they came too close to the castle's old furnishings.

Hårleman is said to be especially protective of the interior and its objects. According to witnesses he has breathed on visitors' necks or even tugged at their clothes if they touched the antiques without respect.

From monastery to castle

Börringekloster has a long and varied history. In the 1200s the site was a Benedictine monastery dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and from here proceeded a period of devotion and farming in combination. The monastery came to an abrupt end during the Reformation in Denmark, when it was taken by the Crown and later granted to noble families such as Brahe and Tott.

In 1582 the old monastery was demolished and a castle building began to take shape. The present main building, bearing Carl Hårleman's mark, was raised in 1763. During the 1800s a third storey was added, giving Börringekloster its current appearance. Although the castle is not open to the public today, it remains an iconic building looking out over Klosterviken and the surrounding landscape.

Hidden stories

Despite its historical significance, Börringekloster is still a place of activity. There is a shop on the estate selling local produce, and the Börringebarnen preschool, started in 1989, is located on the grounds. Although daily life here can look idyllic, staff and visitors sometimes describe strange phenomena they cannot explain.
