Richmond Bridge in Tasmania was built by convict labour in the 1820s and is Australia's oldest bridge still in use. During construction the convicts were overseen by George Grover, a flogger so despised that, as the story goes, his own victims threw him from the bridge to his death on the rocks below. Ever since, Grover's figure is said to appear on the bridge at night, with visitors describing a menacing presence. The legend also features a large black-and-white dog, known as Grover's Dog, which silently escorts night-time walkers across the bridge before dissolving into the dark.
