Det er noe med mørket i gamle borger, skygger som beveger seg i øyekroken og hvisken i tomme rom. Mikael P Wilson vet nøyaktig hvordan det føles – og han har gjort det til sin forretningsidé.

There is something about the darkness in old strongholds: shadows moving at the edge of vision, whispers in empty rooms. Mikael P Wilson knows exactly how it feels — and he has built a business on it.

Since 2013 he has run Skräckfabriken AB, a company that quite literally lives on giving people the shivers. Through ghost walks, horror storytelling and live theatre, Mikael creates experiences where the boundary between imagination and supernatural reality is blurred.

But the road there began in an unexpected way.

"I have always worked with children and young people as a teacher," Mikael says. "But in parallel I have had one foot in the world of theatre and film — in front of and behind the camera."

When he still had short hair and a tidy appearance, he was always cast as a police officer, a soldier or a priest. But as the hair and beard grew, the roles changed. Suddenly he was the villain — and he discovered he was genuinely good at frightening people.

"And it is always more fun to be wicked on stage. That was where the seed of Skräckfabriken was sown. Imagine getting to frighten people full time."

From living rooms to the best-preserved stronghold in the Nordics

In the beginning the business was modest: ghost walks in private homes, horror storytelling on a small scale. Then came the turning point.

"When I started doing the ghost walks at Glimmingehus, that was when it really took off."

The medieval stronghold — the best preserved in the Nordic countries — is not only an architectural masterpiece. It is also charged with legends, ghosts and strange events. A perfect stage for Mikael's unsettling stories.

And it is not only the guests who shiver during the walks.

"Glimmingehus is the place where both I and my fellow actors have experienced the most that is genuinely inexplicable. I do not doubt for a second that there is something beyond what we see."

Shadows, voices — and silence

Mikael describes three particular occasions he will never forget.

"Once I was sitting alone in the lord's chamber waiting for guests. It was dusk, the light falling weakly through the window. Suddenly a shadow sweeps past — from right to left. I opened my eyes immediately, but the room was empty."

Another time, after a performance, he was in one of the older buildings on the site. While washing off his makeup in the bathroom he heard a woman's voice behind him say "No".

"The door was open, but there was no one there. The voice was so clear that I cannot explain it away."

The third experience is perhaps the strangest — a silence so pronounced it felt almost physical.

"Several evenings in a row, just before the guests arrived, it went completely silent. All the natural sounds — birds, tractors — disappeared. As though someone had pressed pause. Then, after a minute, you could hear the guests again."

Darkness with a purpose

Mikael has now taken his concept to more castles and historic settings around the country, but his heart remains in Skåne — and in that feeling that something might be hiding in the shadows.

"I want people to feel that creeping sensation while also learning something about the history of the place. Horror can actually be educational," he says with a smile.

So the next time you hear a faint whispering in an old stone house, perhaps it is only the wind. Or perhaps it is something else. Something waiting in the dark.
