For thirty years the neighbours laid incense at the fence of 300 Kim Mã. A whole body of legend grew around the sealed house: night guards who heard footsteps and voices from empty floors, cold draughts in dead-still air, windows where shadows appeared. In 2018 a wave of night-time 'ghost house visits' swept the city's daredevils, who filmed themselves inside the gates.

The embassy compound was built in the 1980s in central Hanoi but was abandoned in 1991 and stood untouched behind its gates for over thirty years — an empty block in one of Asia's densest cities. When the building was finally handed back and refurbished, Hanoians noted drily that the tenant who had lived there longest was never on any lease.
