Some hotel guests are said to have woken in the middle of the night to the sound of heavy footsteps in the corridor. Looking out, they saw no one. Others have heard muffled knocking from the wall, or felt the bed slowly shift during the night. Most of the activity seems to occur in room 104, directly below the kitchen, where the restaurant manager Carl Emil Fuhre is said to have left a restless presence behind.

The hotel and its ghost

Söderhamn's town hotel has stood on Rådhustorget since 1879 and has been a gathering point in the town for more than a century. But hotel guests and diners are not the only ones said to be there. For a long time, stories have circulated that a former employee never quite left the building — although he died more than seventy years ago.

Carl Emil Fuhre worked as the hotel's restaurant manager and died in 1950, probably of a heart attack, after throwing a disruptive guest out of the restaurant. There have been rumours that his death was suicide, but his grandson Lars Fuhre has denied this. Whatever the cause, he seems to retain a connection to the place.

What happens in room 104

Both guests and staff have described strange events at the hotel, but room 104 stands out. Visitors there have reported lamps switching on and off by themselves, furniture moved during the night, and sounds coming from empty corridors.

The kitchen, where Fuhre died, also seems to be a place of frequent activity. Staff describe the clinking of glasses and cutlery, as though someone were handling them, although no one is there.

Frightening, or a kindly presence?

Despite all the reported events, most people describe Fuhre's presence as calm rather than threatening. He seems mostly to move around the hotel, perhaps keeping an eye on the business, as he did in life.

Sofia Sahlberg, who has worked at the hotel for 25 years, says it does not feel unpleasant — quite the opposite. "You heard that Carl Emil was kind, so you feel safe. You are never alone."

But the question remains: if you book room 104, will you sleep undisturbed?
