Waimano at Pearl City on Oahu operated for most of the twentieth century as a hospital and institution, and a great many people lived out their whole lives in it.

He saw a man standing at the end of the hallway, watching him. He carried on cleaning. When he looked back the figure had gone. When he turned round, it was behind him, watching him from the other end of the hall.

Waimano's history is the history of how Hawaii treated people with disabilities for eighty years, and the closure of the institution came out of a long fight over conditions. The site is closed and access is restricted.
