Shepard had known both wealth and fame. By the end of his life he had neither, and he was in poor emotional health.

After his death the house passed through a succession of owners, and each of them claimed that things went badly for them while they held it. That is an unusual consistency of complaint for a single property.

Two presences are described. One is Shepard himself. The other is an elderly widow who owned the house at some point after him, reported at the windows looking out.

The villa is a designated historic building and has been operated as a museum at various points. It is a genuine architectural oddity, and much of the atmosphere people describe is doing exactly what its builder intended it to do.
