Sailors aboard this destroyer report a large man in a khaki uniform in the forward five inch gun mount, below decks. Some see him at the edge of vision. Some see him plainly.

Khaki identifies him immediately to anybody in the navy. It is what chiefs and officers wear, and a sailor seeing khaki in a machinery space knows at once that it is somebody senior.

Gun mount interlocks exist because the machinery inside them moves with enormous force and does not care what is in the way. Every safety rule aboard a warship was written after somebody was killed.

USS Caron was a Spruance class destroyer, commissioned in 1977 and sunk as a target in 2002.

She is on the bottom of the Atlantic.
