He appears in the tunnels under the campus, with what looks like a third eye in the middle of his forehead.
The tunnels beneath this campus at Columbia, South Carolina are associated with a figure students call the Third Eye Man, described with what appears to be a third eye in the centre of his forehead.
An update filed in December corrects the dating. The sightings do not begin in the 1980s as the original account had it. They go back considerably further, and the earliest reports are from decades before.
That correction matters more than it looks. A legend that appeared in the 1980s is one thing. A legend with a documented paper trail going back to the middle of the twentieth century, in a student newspaper that can be checked, is a different proposition.
The tunnels are real. Most large American campuses of this age have steam and service tunnels underneath them, and students have been getting into them for as long as they have existed.
The tunnels are university property and access is prohibited.
