The Vineyard House stands in Coloma, California, in the valley where the Gold Rush began. It went up in the late 1800s and has been a great many things since: a winery, an inn and restaurant, and at one point a jail. Local accounts also place executions on the property.

The haunting is usually tied to the family who built it, and their history is grim enough on its own. Several of their young children died. Blight destroyed the vineyard the house was named for. The husband contracted syphilis, which in time took his sight and his mind. As his behaviour turned violent, his wife had him chained in the cellar, and that is where he is said to have died. The whole family lies in the graveyard directly across the road, on a slope that looks back at the house.

Most of the reports come from inside the building and were collected from staff and guests during the years it operated as an inn and restaurant. A smaller number come from the graveyard itself.
