The oldest part of the story concerns the woman who owned it, who is said to have hanged herself in the attic. The complaint staff repeat most often is small and stubborn. A pull chain light switch sits at the top of the basement stairs. Turn it on, go back down to finish what you were doing, and the chain gets pulled and the light goes out, leaving you to find the steps in the dark. It has happened often enough that employees simply leave the lower light burning.
