The first house built on Officers Row, and Ulysses Grant lived in it before he was anybody.

The Grant House at Vancouver, Washington is part of Officers Row, a line of colonial style houses built as quarters for the officers of the Vancouver Barracks, standing since the middle of the 1800s.

It was the first one built, and Ulysses Grant lived in it during his posting here, long before the war that made him and the presidency that followed.

Grant's time in the Pacific Northwest was the low point of his life. He was a quartermaster, separated from his wife and children, drinking heavily, and he resigned his commission and left the army in disgrace. Nobody watching him here would have predicted anything.

What is reported in the house is attributed to the officers and families who lived along the row.

The house is now a restaurant and the row is open to walk.
