They say Custer and his men came up the cliff here, and that they are still seen doing it. Custer was never within a thousand miles of this coast.

The story on this stretch of the Mendocino coast is that Custer passed through Fort Bragg with his army, that they came up the steep cliff at Pudding Creek, and that they are still seen climbing it.

Custer never came here. He served in Texas, Kansas, Kentucky and the northern plains, and he died in Montana in 1876. There is no version of his career that brings him to the northern California coast.

What is real is Fort Bragg itself, which was a genuine military post, established in 1857 on the Mendocino Indian Reservation to control the Native people confined there.

So there were soldiers on this ground, and there were people held under them, and the story has attached the most famous name available to a much less comfortable local history.

The cliffs and the trestle at Pudding Creek are public and the coast path runs along them.
