A Victorian mansion in upstate New York once owned by the occult writer Gerina Dunwich. Handprints in the attic came back through several coats of primer.
The Dupree House at Fort Covington, New York is a Victorian mansion known locally as Dunwich Manor, after the occult author Gerina Dunwich, who owned it for a period.
The account behind its reputation is older than that. In the early twentieth century a woman described as mentally disturbed was, according to local tradition, confined in one of the small attic rooms. She died there.
What she left, according to the accounts, were bloodied handprints on the walls and the ceiling.
Several coats of primer and paint were applied over them.
The claim is that they came back through, which is what makes this story travel. Iron in old plaster will bleed through paint, which is the ordinary explanation and does nothing to make an attic room used that way any less grim.
The house is private property.
