The hotel was sold in 1937 to a man who called himself a doctor and opened a cancer hospital in it. He was not a doctor.
The Crescent Hotel at Eureka Springs, Arkansas opened in 1886 as a resort, and what happened to it in the 1930s is the reason it is the most reported building in the state.
In 1937 it was bought by Norman Baker, who called himself a doctor and had no medical training whatever. He opened it as a cancer hospital and told patients he could cure them without surgery. He could not. People sold everything they had to come here and they died in these rooms.
Baker was eventually convicted of mail fraud and imprisoned.
In 2019 workmen digging on the grounds found bottles of his preparations buried on the site.
Other claims circulate about the building and are not documented, so they are left out. The Baker history needs no help.
The hotel is open and runs tours.
