This site at Tallahassee, Florida was first a hospital for tuberculosis, in the years before there was any immunisation, when the disease was a slow sentence and the wards were full of people who knew it.

It later became an institution for people with mental illness and developmental disabilities whose families did not keep them at home.

It closed decades ago, and everything you would expect has been reported there since.

The history behind those two uses is what matters. A tuberculosis hospital held people for years at a time, isolated from their families by law. The institution that followed held people who had been handed over, some as small children, and Florida's record in facilities of this type includes serious abuse that was later investigated by the state.

The people who were here were patients and residents. They did not choose to be.

The buildings have been demolished.
