An abandoned farmhouse above the water in the Bronx, and a local account of an arson that the police are said to have written up as a tragic accident.

At the edge of the small beach community of Silver Beach Gardens in the Bronx stands an old abandoned farmhouse overlooking the water. Local tradition holds that a large mansion once stood beside it.

The story told about that mansion runs as follows. The family who lived in it were wealthy enough to be resented, and one man took that resentment to its conclusion and set the house on fire. The building was destroyed, but the family reached the farmhouse in time and survived. When the police investigated, the account holds that they feared residents would leave Silver Beach if word of an arson got out, and so recorded it as a tragic fire in which the family had died.

That is a serious allegation about a police force, it is unsupported by anything we have been able to find, and it is set down here as folklore rather than history.
