In the spring of 1946, five people were murdered in and around Texarkana over ten weeks. Most were young couples parked in lovers' lanes at night. The killer was never identified and the case has never been closed.

The town shut itself in. People bought guns, boarded windows, and stopped going out after dark, and the newspapers named the man the Phantom Killer. A film made in the 1970s took its title from what the town did that spring, and Texarkana has been living with both ever since.

What is said about a particular tree in this park is legend that grew afterwards, and it is not repeated here as fact.

The victims were real people with families in this town, and several of those families are still here.
