A student woke to a black mass over his bed, holding him down. Later a small circle with a symbol in it appeared burned into the wall above where he slept.

A resident of the north campus dormitories at New Haven, Connecticut woke to a large black shape hovering above his bed, pressing down on him, and found he could not move.

That first part has a name and a physical explanation. Sleep paralysis affects a substantial minority of people at least once, most often in their late teens, and the classic experience is exactly this: waking unable to move, with a dark presence in the room and pressure on the chest. It has been reported in every culture and every century, described as demons, witches or old hags depending on the period.

What came afterwards has no such explanation. Some time later, a small circle with a symbol inside it appeared burned into the wall above his bed, where nothing had been.

Doors in the building were also reported opening on their own.

The halls are student housing and are not open to visitors.
