The industrial site at Selkirk in Albany County, New York covers more than three hundred acres that were once the Becker farm. The original farmhouse is still intact and was used on and off as offices until March 2004, which means employees were working in it well within living memory.

The story passed among them concerns the farm's own history. Becker is said to have found his wife with one of the men he held enslaved. He pushed the man down a narrow, out of the way set of back stairs, and the fall killed him. He then attacked and killed his wife with a knife. Afterwards, by the account, grief for her overtook him.

None of this has been established from any record, and it is set down as what was told in the building rather than as history. What is not in doubt is that people were held in slavery on farms in this part of New York, and that the back stairs in question were built for them to use.

Staff reported a great deal over the years the farmhouse was occupied. The stairs come up in most of it.
