On Saint Valentine's Day 1929, seven men were lined up against the back wall of this garage and shot. The wall was later bought, taken apart and sold.

The red brick garage at 2122 North Clark Street in Chicago was the premises of the S M C Cartage Company. On 14 February 1929, men working for Al Capone entered it and shot seven of Bugs Moran's associates against the back wall.

Moran, the intended target, was not there. Some of the killers were dressed as police officers, which is why the men lined up without resisting.

Nobody was ever convicted.

The massacre turned Capone from a local criminal into a national emergency and set in motion the federal effort that eventually jailed him.

The building was demolished in 1967. The bricks of the wall itself were bought, numbered and sold off individually, and they are scattered across the world in private hands, which is a strange afterlife for a piece of masonry.

The site is now open ground beside a nursing home, and there is nothing there to see except the space where it stood.
