The Queen Anne at the corner of Sutter and Octavia in San Francisco is an elegant Victorian hotel dating from the 1890s.

Before it was a hotel it was a school for girls, run by Miss Mary Lake, and her old office is now a guest room that you can book.

Guests describe being tucked in, having their belongings unpacked, and finding things put away.

That is the sort of thing a headmistress would do, and it is why she is the most affectionately reported figure in this archive.

The building survived the 1906 earthquake and fire, which destroyed most of the city east of Van Ness, and it has been a school, a gentlemen's club and a hotel since.
