The old school at Gay Hill, just outside Big Spring in Texas, stands empty, and the account attached to it is one of the grimmer school legends in the state.

In the telling, the ceiling of the auditorium collapsed and killed pupils. The principal is said to have known that the ceiling was unsafe and to have done nothing until it was too late, and then to have gone home and hanged himself. His house is a short way down the road from the school.

We have found no record of a ceiling collapse at this school, and no reporting of pupil deaths there. The story should be read as local tradition unless somebody produces the documentation. What is certain is that the buildings are abandoned and that they have been visited for decades.

After the supposed disaster the site also acquired a reputation as somewhere used for occult practice, which is a claim made about a great many empty rural buildings and rarely about any of them by name.
