Re-enactors sleeping in the building by the lake were woken when one of them was pushed out of bed. The night before a big event, a man was going round.

Revolutionary War re-enactors staying overnight in one of the buildings near Lake Ontario at Old Fort Niagara had one of their party pushed out of the bed she was sleeping in.

Everybody in the room heard knocking and other noises.

The second account is the one that stays with people. The night before a large re-enactment, a man was moving around the camp asking people something.

The fort is one of the oldest continuously occupied military sites in North America, held in turn by France, Britain and the United States since the 1720s. Its best known story concerns a French officer killed in a duel in the 1750s, whose body went into the well and who is described walking the grounds without his head.

Re-enactors sleeping in period buildings are an unusual class of witness: they are dressed for the wrong century and expecting atmosphere.

The fort is open to visitors.
