The Titanic's surviving crew were lodged here in April 1912 and held a memorial for their dead – guests still wake to weeping and figures in old-fashioned seamen's uniforms.

The sailors' hotel on Jane Street was built in 1908 by the American Seamen's Friend Society, with cabin-like rooms and a rooftop lighthouse tower blinking out over the Hudson. In April 1912 the house took on its darkest role: the surviving crewmen of the Titanic were lodged here after the Carpathia docked at a nearby pier, and in its hall they held a memorial service for their drowned shipmates while the inquiries proceeded. Many carried survivor's guilt for the rest of their lives – and by the house legend, the walls carry it still. Guests at today's Jane Hotel tell of weeping through the walls at night, knocking in the narrow cabins, and glimpses of men in early-1900s uniforms in the corridors. In the ballroom, the temperature is said to drop as if for a moment of silence.
