The Mission Inn was built up over decades by an owner who kept adding to it, and the result is a building of unexpected staircases, sealed doors and spaces that do not connect to anything. Very few American hotels have anything genuinely resembling catacombs beneath them.

It is a working luxury hotel and the reports come from staff and from guests paying a great deal for the privilege.
