Millicent Rogers died at barely seventeen of heart failure. Her father built the library and named it for her, and the town says she never left it.

Henry Huttleston Rogers made an immense fortune at Standard Oil and spent a great deal of it on Fairhaven, Massachusetts, the town he came from. He built its schools, its town hall and its library.

His daughter Millicent died at barely seventeen, of heart failure. The library carries her name.

The story told locally is that he had her buried beneath the foundations before they were finished. That is not true, and it is worth saying so plainly, but it says something about how the town understood what he had done: he built her a building instead of a headstone.

Visitors sometimes see a girl walking the halls, outlined in bright light.

Rogers was also a close friend of Mark Twain, who visited Fairhaven and spoke at the dedication of buildings here.

The library is a working public library, and the interior is worth going in for.
