One night a young man was driving along the road when he thought he saw a woman standing in the middle of it. She appeared suddenly. At first he believed he had hit her; afterwards he realised he had passed straight through her.

Not long after — perhaps a few months — a girl who knew nothing of the first sighting was walking the road at twilight when she met a woman coming the other way. The woman asked whether she knew some of the other boys who walked Mays at night, and the girl said she did. They talked briefly and parted. Her description of the woman was later found to match the one who had been "run over".

So many people have described frightening experiences on this road that many of the details are deliberately left out.
