The story at this school in Redlands, California concerns a boy called Billy, hit by a school bus in the late 1950s or early 1960s and carried into the nurse's office, where he died. As he was dying he is said to have talked about wanting to get back to school.

The practice that grew from it is simple. Knock on the nurse's door and he knocks back.

An update filed in September 2004 records the whole account as an urban myth.

We keep it with that attached, because school legends of this exact shape, a child killed near the gates who wants back inside, appear at hundreds of American schools with a different first name each time. The knock is what makes it spread, since any pupil can perform it in ten seconds on the way past.
