Jane McCrea was killed here in July of that year. She was engaged to a Loyalist officer serving with Burgoyne's army, and she was killed by warriors allied to the British while travelling to meet him. The account that she was scalped in a closet in this house is the version told locally; historians disagree about the details and the location.

What is not in doubt is the effect. Burgoyne's failure to punish the killing was used against him, the story spread through New England in weeks, and militia turned out in numbers that helped destroy his army at Saratoga.
